After Virtue is a watershed in MacIntyre's career. It follows his emergence from Marxism, but draws on Marxist sources and arguments. It precedes his move to Thomism, but already draws on Augustine and Aquinas. Because of its watershed nature, it has gained a wide readership in various fields but it treats a variety of issues in ways that are unfamiliar either to Marxists schooled in the social sciences or to Thomists schooled in medieval metaphysics.   Reading Alasdair MacIntyre's After Virtue provides a commentary that will be accessible to students, valuable to scholars, and useful to teachers. Students will find help to navigate the two main arguments of After Virtue, to understand its interpretation of history, and to engage its proposal for a form of ethics and politics that returns to the tradition of the virtues. Scholars will find the book useful as a general guide to MacIntyre's ethics. A reapropriação macIntyriana da noção de philia aristotélica: o animal apolítico?

Pretende-se mostrar neste artigo que a noção macIntyriana de amizade, que,
segundo este autor, seria uma recuperação da noção aristotélica de amizade (philia), ao
deixar de contemplar o seu aspecto político, explicitamente marcado por Aristóteles,

reduziria a noção de amizade ao seu aspecto social ou cívico, enfraquecendo, assim, a

natureza política do homem.

Narrativa, Inteligibilidade e Responsabilidade: Notas Acerca do Conceito de Identidade Pessoal em Alasdair Macintyre Revista THEORIA - REVISTA ELETRÔNICA DE FILOSOFIA

Frente às discussões contemporâneas acerca dos problemas referentes à constituição da identidade pessoal, o presente artigo tem como objetivo central explicitar a concepção de identidade pessoal conforme defendida por Alasdair MacIntyre no intuito de provar que tal concepção mostra-se superior ao modelo de “self” liberal moderno. Para isso, procuramos esboçar como se entrelaçam três conceitos macintyreanos fundamentais, a saber, narrativa, inteligibilidade e responsabilidade.

Abstract

In After Virtue, Alasdair MacIntyre argues that the Enlightenment project of providing grounds for morality has been a failure, and believes that as a result, we are left with one of the two options: either a revival of Aristotelian virtue ethics or an endorsement of Nietzschean emotivism, i.e. a version of moral relativism. I shall first challenge MacIntyre’s emotivist portrait of Nietzsche and suggest an alternative reading of Nietzsche. If my diagnosis is correct, then we also need to reinterpret the relation between MacIntyre and Nietzsche. This article aims to identify the difference in their characterization of the problem of morality, evaluate their proposal for a possible dissolution of the problem, and compare their method of moral enquiry.
