A mestranda LORENA MARIA DE MOURA SANTOS defendeu a dissertação de mestrado "Comunidade e moralidade na filosofia de Alasdair MacIntyre" no Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ética e Epistemologia da UFPI, no último dia 18 de outubro. A dissertação foi escrita sob a orientação do Prof. Dr. Helder Buenos Aires de Carvalho e a banca examinadora foi composta ainda pelos professores-doutores Odílio Alves Aguiar (UFC) e Aldir Araújo Carvalho Filho (UFMA).

In Reason, Tradition, and the Good, Jeffery L. Nicholas addresses the failure of reason in modernity to bring about a just society, a society in which people can attain fulfillment. Developing the critical theory of the Frankfurt School, Nicholas argues that we rely too heavily on a conception of rationality that is divorced from tradition and, therefore, incapable of judging ends. Without the ability to judge ends, we cannot engage in debate about the good life or the proper goods that we as individuals and as a society should pursue.

Nicholas claims that the project of enlightenment—defined as the promotion of autonomous reason—failed because it was based on a deformed notion of reason as mere rationality, and that a critical theory of society aimed at human emancipation must turn to substantive reason, a reason constituted by and constitutive of tradition. To find a reason capable of judging ends, Nicholas suggests, we must turn to Alasdair MacIntyre’s Thomistic-Aristotelianism. Substantive reason comprises thinking and acting on the set of standards and beliefs within a particular tradition. It is the impossibility of enlightenment rationality to evaluate ends and the possibility of substantive reason to evaluate ends that makes the one unsuitable and the other suitable for a critical theory of society. Nicholas’s compelling argument, written in accessible language, remains committed to the promise of reason to help individuals achieve a good and just society and a good life. This requires, however, a complete revolution in the way we approach social life.

"Under Weber's Shadow" presents an extended critical evaluation of the social and political thought of Jurgen Habermas, Hannah Arendt and Alasdair MacIntyre. Although hailing from very different philosophical traditions, these theorists all take as their starting-point Max Weber's seminal diagnosis of late modernity, the view that the world-historic processes of rationalization and disenchantment are paradoxical in promising freedom yet threatening servitude under the 'iron cage' of instrumental reason. However, each rejects his pessimistic understanding of the grounds and possibilities of political life, accusing him of complicity in the very realities he sought to resist. Seeking to move beyond Weber's monological view of the self, his subjectivism and his identification of the political with domination, they offer alternative, intersubjective conceptions of the subject, ethics and politics that allow for positive future possibilities. Narrativa, Inteligibilidade e Responsabilidade: Notas Acerca do Conceito de Identidade Pessoal em Alasdair Macintyre Revista THEORIA - REVISTA ELETRÔNICA DE FILOSOFIA

Frente às discussões contemporâneas acerca dos problemas referentes à constituição da identidade pessoal, o presente artigo tem como objetivo central explicitar a concepção de identidade pessoal conforme defendida por Alasdair MacIntyre no intuito de provar que tal concepção mostra-se superior ao modelo de “self” liberal moderno. Para isso, procuramos esboçar como se entrelaçam três conceitos macintyreanos fundamentais, a saber, narrativa, inteligibilidade e responsabilidade.

Abstract

In After Virtue, Alasdair MacIntyre argues that the Enlightenment project of providing grounds for morality has been a failure, and believes that as a result, we are left with one of the two options: either a revival of Aristotelian virtue ethics or an endorsement of Nietzschean emotivism, i.e. a version of moral relativism. I shall first challenge MacIntyre’s emotivist portrait of Nietzsche and suggest an alternative reading of Nietzsche. If my diagnosis is correct, then we also need to reinterpret the relation between MacIntyre and Nietzsche. This article aims to identify the difference in their characterization of the problem of morality, evaluate their proposal for a possible dissolution of the problem, and compare their method of moral enquiry.

Resumo

O conceito de reificação tem uma grande importância para as correntes filosóficas que, em maior ou menor grau, são influenciadas pelo pensamento de Marx. Foi tomando este conceito marxista que Georg Lukács apresentou uma leitura do fenômeno da reificação como inerente às relações de produção capitalistas. Retomando o conceito, Honneth propõe uma abordagem a partir das relações intersubjetivas, destacando que ao invés de ser um efeito estrtural do sistema capitalista a reificação se deve às patologias da intersubjetividade que têm em sua base a luta pelo reconhecimento. Lukács e Honneth estão em oposição na medida em que o fenômeno da reificação é abordado pelo primeiro de forma “descritiva” e pelo último de forma “normativa”. O propósito do presente trabalho é expor a dificuldade que a ausência de um fundamento ontológico acarreta para ambas as leituras e, ao mesmo tempo, propor uma releitura descritiva e normativa do fenômeno da reificação partindo da ética das virtudes de Alasdair MacIntyre.
